Advice From the Experts – Working With Adults During VBS
The best VBS leaders are learners, and the best learners enjoy sharing with others what they have learned through trial and error. Today’s advice comes from Arizona’s own Lorie Honeycutt who serves as a national conference leader and promoter of Adult VBS. Lorie is a popular writer of Adult VBS resources including Lifeway’s VBS 2015 and 2016 resources.
- Plan early, often and not alone. The more adults involved in the planning process, the better!
- Look at everything on the Adult VBS Enhanced CD. Many leaders miss out on the great free resources found there.
- Adults enjoy fun, too! Don’t dismiss the crafts, recreation, and snack ideas. If your time is short, rotate these extras one per day.
- Adult VBS is for all ages. Vary the time, venue and schedule to best fit different ages groups.
- Adult VBS is perfect for the mature Christian, new believer and unbeliever. The curriculum can be easily adapted for the needs of those attending.
- ‘If you build it, they will come’ only works in the movies! A well planned and prepared Adult VBS, requires an equally well executed promotional plan. In many cases, the Adult VBS leader is not the best promoter so find another adult to spearhead this important task.
- Adult VBS is not written for a lecture format. Different teaching strategies and small group activities allow time for adults to process and build relationships with other adults.
- Adult VBS doesn’t end when the last session is over. Work with your Adult VBS team to plan several Continue the Connection activities to help strengthen the adult relationships started during VBS.
- Most unchurched adults don’t come to church because they aren’t asked. ASK!
- Try growing your Adult VBS ministry each year by reaching a new age or language group.
