VBS Geek of the Week

This week’s VBS Geek of the Week is Charles Williams from Wilkies Grove Baptist Church in Hickory, NC.

1. What has been your “geekiest” VBS moment?

Well, our church secretary cringes when my “VBS ordering” begins (which is usually the day after the current VBS ends). She never knows how many packages will be delivered or what might be in those packages.  When the 2012 theme was announced, she wanted to know if I was going to purchase an airplane and have it delivered. Hmmm…. I thought! So, I created a pretty good replica of an airplane invoice with matching envelope and mailed it to the church for “payment”.  As chair of Budget and Finance, I had to sign it of course and “authorized” the purchase.  She got a kick out it…..she passed it on to our Deacon Chair….he wasn’t as calm until she had to explain!

2. What is your favorite VBS theme to date?

Actually, our church is new to LIFEWAY.  We were with another company, but after seeing my own children visit churches that used Lifeway VBS, I was hooked! They fell in love with the excitement in the music, the lessons, and themes.  I knew  we had to make a change, so last year was our first year with LIFEWAY… so, I have to say that NYC was pretty great!!  My kids Lillie and Harrison would probably vote for Saddle Ridge Ranch!

3. What makes you continue to do VBS year after year?

I truly love VBS and the excitement of the week! Our former pastor always said that VBS was the most important week on our church calendar.  What other time do you get so many folks entering and exiting through your church doors hearing the gospel presented in a way that draws them in?  How else does a church gather children together to worship….to watch kids so excited about the doors opening to “see and hear” what will be presented that night.  They come to hear the good news of Jesus Christ! I always say that no matter how large our budget and no matter how many months of planning it takes…if one accepts Jesus Christ—it was all worth it!

4. How would you complete this sentence?

You might be a VBS geek if . . . your church (and your wife) lovingly refers to you as “THE VBS NERD!”

5. Will we see you at one of the VBS Previews?

ABSOLUTELY!!  VIP seating! HA! Ridgecrest 2012…WILKIES GROVE WILL BE THERE!
