One of the rewards of working on a curriculum people enjoy using is interaction with the users of the resources. LifeWay’s VBS team is in constant contact with ministry leaders, volunteers, and even the kids who participate in VBS. We have the opportunity to meet face-to-face during January Previews and regional training events, but throughout the year we interact through phone calls, emails, and this blog.
Some of our favorite conversations are with VBS leaders, parents, and kids who want to know how they can be part of the team. You know you must be doing something right when others want to join you.
- How can I (or my kid) be on the music DVD? ANS: This is the question we receive most often from kids themselves. I wish I could respond that we hold open auditions. Instead of choosing kids or young adults to perform the motions we choose a choreographer to create the motions. The choreographer has a team of kids from her church or studio she works with for VBS as well as other ministry projects.
- How can I become an actor in the worship rally video? ANS: Once a filming location is chosen, LifeWay’s video producer sends a character list to a local talent agent. The agent selects several potential actors for each character and sends audition videos back to the producer. For example, the actors in the Journey Off the Map video live near the primary filming location in Hawaii. LifeWay’s VBS filming schedule is extremely brief – typically two weeks or less – and using local actors saves both time and money.
- How can I become a writer for LifeWay’s VBS? ANS: There are several basic qualifications for being a writer: must use LifeWay’s VBS resources in his own church, must work with the age group he is writing for, and must be able to write quickly and meet tight deadlines.
