Foto Friday. . .Bad 80's Prom Dress or VBS Set?!?
Okay, I must admit that’s a funny blog post title! Let’s start off with a few photos first on this edition of Foto Friday! Bad 80’s Prom Dress or VBS Set?
Okay, this photo is a little bit out of focus but I’m going to say Bad 80’s Prom Dress!
Even if this was in focus, I’d still say, Bad 80’s Prom Dress!
Bad 80’s Prom Dress, right?
NOPE! Actually, it’s a VBS set or more accurately, it’s part of a VBS set! (my wife was having fun putting the material on me!) lol!
This material is part of the Northern Lights set that I’m currently building for our VBS video shoot that’s coming up later this month! When I decided I wanted to build this set, I knew it was going to be a challenge because, I don’t sew or have any working knowledge of fabric but I knew I wanted to do this one. You see, I come from a military family (Go Navy!) and when I was kid, we were stationed in Maine. It was there that I first saw the Northern Lights! They were beautiful! Since then, I have seen the Northern Lights when we were stationed in Memphis, TN and once again while living in Nashville!
But, back to the fabric. . .I was in a fabric store the other day, looking for some fabric that would work for the set. I came the following material.
The material on the right is a royal metallic blue. The middle fabric is a lilac pearlized very thin material and the one of the left is a turquoise pearlized material. First off, I plan to use the royal metallic blue as a base. I then plan to use the lilac pearlized (very thin) fabric over the royal blue. Finally, I plan to use the turquoise pearlized fabric over that. If you look in the next photo, the fabrics interact with each other and I think I might be able to replicate the Northern Lights feel with the fabrics!
Oh, as for the bad 80’s prom dress reference. . .as the gentleman at the fabric store was helping me, I made a comment that it looked like I was making a bad 80’s prom dress! He wasn’t expecting that and actually had a good laugh!
Stay tuned for more 80’s prom dress. . .er, I mean VBS sets! lol! I can’t wait to show you all more of the set, after I finish it!

I have used fabric for years in my VBS decorations. This year’s backdrops for our student photos were an “I love New York” throw with several New York attractions woven into the fabric and a Mets blanket. I bought these at an area closeout store for less than $4 each.
Thanks for the Northern Lights idea. I will be watching for similar fabrics to show up on the $1 a yard closeout table at WalMart.

Love the fabric – which store and does it cost a fortune? I would love to get hold of some for our VBS next year!
